The sewage works remained a continued point of concern for the Americans between July and September 1943. Regular inspections were carried out to identify the source of the illness that had spread through the base during this period. The stream leading to the works — described by 381st diarists as a “stagnant creek” — was identified as the most likely cause. Conditions were not helped by the fact that the Americans also used this area to dump their waste.
